PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

PARTICIPANT INFORMATION PAGE

The workshop was developed by Dr Alexandru Modoi during his doctoral studies: 'Re-imagining Romanian culture from afar through still life photographic image of wolf myths' (2023).

This workshop has been designed for participants to work with photography and tell their stories.

It is suitable for everyone at any level: individuals or small groups, beginners to advanced and undergraduate to postgraduate students.

 

Structure: Semi-structured six-stages workshop, tailored at your own pace.

Duration: 6 to 8 hours plus 3-4 hours of individual work.

Where: Face to face, online or hybrid, according to your needs.

Price: £190 per participant.

Discount: 30% for bookings of more than one person.

Stage 1. Introductions (1 h)

    - Introduction of the workshop stages.

    - Identifying and discussing the stories.

    - Looking at previous works produced by the participants.

 

Stage 2. Identifying and choosing the photo camera suitable for you and your story (1 h)

    - Choose between a digital or analogue camera, single-use or instant camera or iPhone or smartphone camera.

    - Identify which printing method is suitable for your work.

    - Print the photographs.

    - Look at samples for inspiration and guidance.

 

Stage 3. Taking pictures 

    - Ensure your picture is ready for the next stages.

    - Engage in recommended individual work (minimum 3-4 h).

    - Optionally, book one-on-one bespoke sessions if needed (additional cost applies).

    - Participants must produce their photographs.

    - Create photographs that reflect your personal story and experiences.

    - Capture photos to represent your folklore and traditions.

    - It is essential to produce 5 to 20 printed photos, each sized 5 x 7 in. 

 

Stage 4. Asking questions, a semi-structured stage to discuss the photographs (2 h)

    A. What is in this picture?

        For example: a particular object, landscape, place, action, building or person.

    B. What does it represent to you? 

        Discussing the myth, story or personal experience.

    C. What are your feelings about it?

        Question 1 and 2 would direct the discussion to present your feelings as you experienced them.

    D. Select the photographs: What photographs represent your story best?

        Identify and select a photograph or photographs that represent your story best.

 

Stage 5. Reflect upon your selected photographs and identify possible outcomes to present your work (1 h)

    - Revisit the selected photographs.

    - Understand the created photo-entanglement.

    - Find out how you would like to present your photograph(s) and personal statement(s).

    - Explore presentation options such as an exhibition, online gallery, a personal photo album, a photo book.

    - Reflect on the importance of presenting your own photograph(s) entangled with your own personal statement(s).

 

Stage 6. Reviewing the process (1 h)

    - Review the workshop steps: identify your story to share, choosing a camera, take and print your photos, discuss and select them, identify possible ways to present your work and finally, present your work.

    - By the end of this workshop, participants will have identified and understood the role of the photograph entangled with its statement.

    - After this workshop, participants will have a selected work to present and potentially develop further

 

By the end of this workshop participants would have:

  • produced and printed its own photographs 
  • experienced various ways of working with photography
  • a better understanding of the role of photography in accessing memories and personal feelings
  • a better understanding of the role of the artist/personal statement
  • become ready to present their photographs with their stories to other people and to develop further work
  • a better understanding of the photo-entanglement.  

 

Chester photo festival

 

It was founded in September 2023 and is available to public from 1st May 2024.

The 1st edition of the annual Chester Photo Festival is expected to take place on 2nd-4th May 2025, after one year of work.
